  • The Art Spirit of Chinese Culture

    Lou Yulie;Wu Lingwei;Department of Philosophy, Peking University;

    The attainment of the humanistic spirit of traditional Chinese culture was mainly through rites and musical enlightenment. The spirit of Chinese culture concerns ethics and art. A good combination of moral and art education is the highest state of moral pursuit and artistic pursuit, as well. In the context of Chinese culture and art, music is more than a means to satisfy a person's physical appetite; it also serves to inspire people to cultivate a sound and complete personality. No art form can exist in isolation. Art should express the subject consciousness of individual artists and, more importantly, the common pursuit of all human beings. Such a philosophy should be reflected in every piece of artwork. The social guiding role of aesthetic education is a key feature of Chinese culture and there has been a civilizing influence pervading all aspects of Chinese culture and art. In a profound way, traditional Chinese art conveys the mental outlook and joy of Chinese culture. The fundamental humanism of Chinese culture is demonstrated in every aspect of Chinese art, which collectively highlights Chinese people's tastes and cultural pursuits. Therefore, it is easier to approach truths through art.

  • Cultural Sharing, Connectivity and Road Expansion——Cultural Transformation and Anthropology Study of World Care from the Belt and Road Initiative

    Zhao Xudong;Chen Ming;Renmin University of China;

    The era of cultural sharing marks itself mainly in the following three aspects: First, the virtual presence which bridges the world together and further broadens our horizons to observe the world in an even more extensive way. Second, the formerly stable structural relationship between peripheral regions and central regions gradually grows uncertain. Third, the establishment of cyberized roads or the cyberized expansion of roads leads the advance toward a global connectivity where the virtual world closely interacts with the real world. After "the Belt" concept comes into being, the anthropologists must upgrade their research from previously established fixed-point perspective to a more extensive observation over the "Belt" or a wider range, while the concept of "the Road" encourages anthropologists to study the culture of the other half of the world, namely, to read the world history as a whole new picture from a Chinese or eastern point of view. It is necessary for anthropology to break the geological and cultural borders in the real world to extend its antenna to a more extensive range, which will also bring the "otherness" of this field to a more prominent and obvious play. It is inevitable that all human cultures are about to take a core standing in the Belt and Road Initiative.

  • Theoretical Reflection on Meaning Production of Media Discourse in Intercultural Communications

    Zhang Li;Wen Yi;Beijing Academy of Social Sciences;Communication University of China;

    Media discourse in the context of intercultural communications is an important channel that countries and cultures use to communicate. It is also a process of meaning interpretation and knowledge production, which exerts a great impact on the establishment of the world's cultural order. This paper discusses media discourse in intercultural communications theoretically from the perspective of knowledge production, media dialogue and meaning construction. It is suggested that an effective ideographic mechanism be developed and improved, and the essential meaning of Chinese culture be initiatively exported and integrated into a knowledge system of cognition and understanding about the world to promote the understanding and exchange between China and other countries and to help create an equal and reasonable world cultural order.

  • The Theoretical Innovation and Exemplary Value of the Belt and Road Initiative

    Wang Yajun;Wu Lingwei;School of Economics & Management, Tongji University;

    As a global public good, the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by the Chinese government features being "non-rivalrous" and "non-excludable," which are two essential characteristics of public goods. From design philosophy to operational framework, from vision to action, distinct Chinese characteristics, style and temperament are fully demonstrated by this initiative. In theory, the Belt and Road Initiative promotes multiple innovations in global governance and enriches and develops international cooperation and the global value chain. The "Silk Road spirit" inherits and innovates the core philosophy of China's diplomacy since 1949; more importantly, its principle of achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration is a key contribution to global governance theory. In practice, the Belt and Road Initiative highlights both regional cooperation and international agreement, and initiates a new model for China's diplomatic practice and international cooperation. Therefore, it is of exemplary value in terms of development, peace, culture and cooperation, while offering a new solution to dealing with international relations in the era of Reform and Opening-up. The past three years has generated marked achievements. The Belt and Road construction is at a critical stage of transition from quantitative change to qualitative change, from small achievements to significant success. In the future, China should take the initiative to promote the construction of two principal axes, further integrate with the philosophy underpinning China's diplomacy as a major country, innovate the theoretical system of the Belt and Road Initiative and forge a corresponding security system. As the old Chinese saying goes, "Big countries should treat small countries with kindness and justice, while small countries should treat big countries with wisdom." China should properly address the competition and cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road and further advance institutional construction within the framework of its major country diplomacy.

  • A Study on the Cooperative Mechanism of the Belt and Road Initiative from the Perspective of New Regionalism

    Deng Tingting;Ma Chunxue;Wu Lingwei;Law School of Central South University;

    The loosely-typed, duty-overlapped and subject-isolated cooperative mechanism of the Belt and Road Initiative has significantly limited the advancement of the initiative and affected the full play of its cooperative effect. New Regionalism is a theory of international relations that concerns international cooperation at the regional level. Its characteristics of multilevel, multi-topic and multi-subject conform to the cooperation needs of the Belt and Road Initiative and provide a guiding framework for the cooperative mechanism of the Initiative. According to the theoretical connotation of New Regionalism, the cooperative mechanism of the Belt and Road Initiative should enrich its cooperation forms, deepen cooperation topics and promote the participation of "State-Market-Society". This mechanism is expected to form various cooperation models, comprehensive governance and diversified participants to enable the smooth advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative.

  • Regional Economic Cooperation between the Belt and Road Initiative and the APEC

    Sheng Bin;Guo Ting;Wu Lingwei;Nankai University;

    The Belt and Road Initiative is inherently consistent with APEC in terms of geographical scope, objective, connotation and cooperative principle and is closely related and complementary to China's push for the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific region. China should prioritize the projects concerning infrastructure construction and connectivity improvement in surrounding countries and regions during the advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative and APEC cause, enhance its cooperation with key players like Russia and ASEAN countries, promote in-depth integration of regional economies, and properly address possible political and economic risks within and beyond APEC region. Such external efforts are expected to boost domestic industry restructuring and economic development.

  • Cultural Confidence as a National Strategy: Significance and Construction

    Xu Zhenglin;Chen Shaolin;Wu Lingwei;Shanghai University;

    In the context of globalization, Western values keep expanding across the globe, maintaining their dominance. Domestically, the development of Chinese culture lags behind its economic growth. Globally, China has yet to develop a significant power of speech. Also, China's overseas image is not in line with its real strength. The introduction of cultural confidence, therefore, is a must move to tackle China's dilemma of international cultural communications and also an emergency measure to address a crisis of domestic cultural anxiety and identity. Cultural cognition, cultural communications, and cultural development are prerequisites for building and boosting cultural confidence. For the construction of cultural confidence, key actions include confronting the crisis of faith, conducting a self-examination of our culture, enhancing mainstream values, improving the compatible mechanisms, integrating traditional culture, and properly approaching Western culture.

  • On the Ethical Significance of Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind

    Wang Zeying;Xu Qingtong;Hunan Normal University;

    The value concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, posed and profoundly expounded by contemporary Chinese government leaders, offers an in-depth insight into the development trend of the world today and a fundamental solution to various global crises. It reveals the highly interdependent relationships between people and between nations, where they share the same benefits and risks against the backdrop of globalization, informatization and network civilization, asks for the withdrawal of existing egoism that disregards others' legitimate interests and the zero-sum bias that views one's gain as another's loss, while building a harmonious world featuring harmonious co-existence, common development and lasting peace. The value concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind is highly and profoundly significant for the creative evolution of ethics, not only laying a foundation in terms of values for a healthy, just and sensible global ethic and injecting the spirit of pursuing equal and win-win cooperation into international relations, but also providing theoretical support for an inclusive human ethical civilization that consists of mutual learning and harmonious co-existence of different ideas, accentuating the guiding idea of "devote your mind to heaven and earth, devote your life to the people; succeed the wisdom of the past sages; create peace for ten thousand generations."

  • Articulation and Game Playing of the ICH Discourses in Folk Culture Field

    Zhu Shenghui;Wu Lingwei;Tianjin University;

    It has been over ten years since the Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH) protection movement was launched in China. During this period, a unique discourse system has been established. The three parties of the state, market and academic circles have respectively created administrative, industrial and knowledge discourses about the ICH. First, the representation of folk culture was incorporated into both the ICH protection system with list as the core and the cultural reconstruction strategy in the transition period, subsequently into national narrative through implementation of policies and administration by the government. Second, market operations have transformed heritage resources into cultural capital to boost the culture sector and tourism, and thus reinvigorate folk culture and brought about qualitative changes. Third, academics have made ICH discourses integrated with multidiscipline and extend academic discourse from universities and research institutions to the public sphere and cultural practice. The formation of the above discourse types reflects the articulation and game playing of ICH discourses in the folk culture field, and therefore they combine to form an ideal way to approach the cultural transformation and cultural politics of contemporary China.

  • Traumatic Memory and Social Identity: The Public Construction of the Nanjing Massacre's Historical Recognition

    Li Xin;Wu Lingwei;Xu Qingtong;Jiangsu Academy of Social Sciences;Institute of the Nanjing Massacre History and International Peace;

    The Nanjing Massacre is an unmentionable World War II memory. Haunted by such a typical traumatic memory, the victims of the Nanjing Massacre are experiencing a social identity crisis which is subtle but should by no means be overlooked. There is no shortage of "national humiliation" arguments lamenting for their misfortune and raging over their servility. Yet at the same time, there are also face-saving attempts to deliberately amplify the Chinese people's resistance during the Massacre. These are all modern representations of the social identity crisis facing the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. 2017 marked the 80 th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre. Those who have not experienced that holocaust tend to blame the victims' lack of resistance spirit. Fundamentally, such criticism roots in no appropriate access to the real situation of the Nanjing Massacre and the extreme helplessness of those victims in the face of death. The underestimation of the power of extreme situations leads to the above fundamental attribution error. Therefore, China must construct a shared traumatic memory to secure the most extensive possible social identity for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre.

  • The Natural History Approach to Maintaining Ecological Balance

    Liu Huajie;Liu Yufei;Tsinghua University;

    The present ecological imbalance is due to human beings' unrestrained desires and their actions of developing multifarious strong forces in order to conquer nature. Present science and technology and institutional arrangement still follow the old-fashioned premises. According to Tao Te Ching, nature and the natural process are sacred. The concept of Anthropocene and the idea of unpredictability from complexity science remind us that it is necessary to revive the old tradition of natural history, which is interesting enough and helps to maintain the ecological balance.

  • Study of Great Chinese Inventions Based on the Concept of Cultural Consciousness

    Hua Jueming;Wu Lingwei;Chinese Academy of Sciences and advisor at Research Society of Traditional Chinese Arts and Crafts;Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Beihang University and Tongji University;

    Based on the concept of cultural consciousness, this paper clarifies the misunderstanding of the "Four Great Inventions", then defines the concept of inventions and corresponding grading and rating systems. Numerous senior historians of science and technology were invited to review the great Chinese inventions before the book The Thirty Great Chinese Inventions was finally compiled and published. This paper also points out that the Chinese themselves must clearly understand things concerning China and China must have a say over the issue of inventions. The scientific spirit of deriving truth from facts must be rigorously upheld during the study and rating of great inventions.

  • Philosophical Thinking on Chinese Drama

    Tian Benxiang;Tang Qinquan;Chinese National Academy of Arts;

    There is a profound and close relationship between philosophy and drama. All great writers have a philosophical vision and fantasy of one kind or another. As Wang Guowei said, "A Dream of Red Mansions is universally acclaimed as a philosophical and literary work." However, Chinese drama has always been plagued by pragmatism and instrumentalism, and often finds itself caught in the trap of philosophical poverty when it comes to dramatic writing and theoretical criticism related to drama. Friedrich Engels once said, "The immense depth of thought and the historical content are perfectly integrated with the vividness and richness of Shakespearean plots." This remains the highest philosophical standards we are going to reach in dramatic writing.
